Two friends who have grown up together without mothers take a different path as adults. Vernice (Niecy) heads to Spellman College falling in love and finding herself included in a powerful and respected family in Atlanta. Annie takes a tougher path making ends meet however she and her companions can housekeeping at a brothel. Even though the two friends are apart and didn't part easily they keep writing letters. Their paths may be different but each faces challenges, segregation and racism and find love and sorrow. It is a beautifully written story that doesn't gloss over the struggle and longing for the mother they never had but also highlights the love and family they found. 4 stars

A slight framed bondsman dwarfed by his alien master tries to not get himself killed or his new young companion as they navigate their master's latest get rich quick scheme. After the fall of Earth aliens came to pick through the wreckage and take the few struggling humans into their care (read enslaved). These generations bred for the purpose of serving the Greys live every day as if it is their last. John is clever and truly believes his master loves him but when he learns the truth survival takes on new meaning. Excellent narration and it is as much fun as the author's other Mickey7 series. Science fiction lite! 4 stars

A journey begins into the wilderness by the Hudson Bay Company fueled by greed and the promise of untapped gold. A vein of gold found in a hunk of quartz whose location is known by the native people is all it takes for this group to come into far North Canada with the promise of fair trade with the natives. Of course greed from both parties wins over fairness and the seeds of distrust are planted. Violence mixed with moments of calm this is a look at power struggles, gold fever, revenge and the unfair treatment of those deemed inferior especially women. Readers of THE COMPANY by Stephen R. Bown, Ian McGuire's first book and HOW MUCH THESE HILLS ARE GOLD will enjoy. 4 stars Delilah, the happy go lucky, not afraid to be goofy weather girl gets paired up with Jackson, the serious, responsible, all about the science guy who is terrified to be on camera to cover a blizzard. All of it looks like a deliberate attempt to make them look bad on camera (especially Delilah) by a jerk in the office. Everything goes from 0 to 60 when the storm makes a turn right at them and they have to share a room. The storm might not be their biggest problem. Enemies to lovers vibe, characters with big hearts, oil vs. water personalities and wonderful dialogue make this a fuzzy romance that will put a warm smile on your face this winter. Fans of Emily Henry will love B.K. Borison. 4 stars
Gritty stories of good and evil offer insight in average lives. They cover many decades as well as various parts of the country but the common thread is women just trying to navigate life fighting real and imagined demons. I don't usually enjoy short stories but these melded from one into the other seamlessly. I also enjoyed the author's notes on each which gave some background. 4 stars
Leena sells her deepest secrets to a mysterious lord in order to save her sick brother. She agrees to work for him locating a ghost using her ability to see and speak to the dead. Sparks fly as they detest (or pretend to) each other but they grow to something more as the danger mounts and Bram St. Silas reveals his softer side. This dark gothic debut covers a lot of ground in the first book, building what feels like a Victorian setting that is unique but also familiar. Leena begins as a tragic figure trying to save her brother, get her father out of prison and must overcome her distrust of the gentry. She proves to not only possess a sharp wit and intellect but learns how to use the sharp end of a blade as well. There is everything you look for in a dark romantasy - enemies to lovers, clever dialogue, curses, demons, danger and even a haunted house. 4 stars Classic Catherine Coulter - an orphan rescued and lovingly raised by his adopted family meets an outspoken young woman unlikely to marry willingly but her dowry is tempting. The two are attracted to each other but a match seems unlikely until the tables are turned. Marrying for love - a rarity in Victorian England and it seems that fate is not finished with them as someone wants them eliminated from the inheritance. A read that is guaranteed to take you away from your troubles and leave you with a smile. Not overly sweet but not spicy either making this a choice for a large audience. 3 1/2 stars
A teen obsessed with her teacher runs from her small town after his wife is murdered. Years later she is in New York and at a book event where the story is right out of her teen diary. She befriends the author in an attempt to get her diary back only to get pulled back into the past she ran from. Twisted and reminded me of MY DARK VANESSA and YELLOWFACE. Is memory the same as truth? 4 stars Historical fiction on the high seas with two of the most famous females pirates whose story has been largely overlooked. This is the story of Anne Bonny and Mary Read told from a prison cell to a man writing a book on pirates. Both of these women found themselves involved in a life at sea due to the men they loved. Men ruled both land and sea and would not tolerate (or feared) a woman doing a man's job. Both women hid their gender and were given a postponed execution because they were captured pregnant. It is a story of fierce loyalty, bravery and love as well as one heck of an adventure story. Their story was largely erased if not for the book that Captain Charles Johnson wrote on pirates. The perfect escape read of the Golden Age of piracy and a look at life for unconventional women as well as the politics behind piracy. Readers of THE NIGHT SHIP and IF THE TIDE TURNS will enjoy this. 4 stars Sebastian is an immortal hunter and along with his internal demon, sets out to kill the famous Beast of Gevaudan (believed to be the first werewolf in historical records). While on the hunt he falls in love with another hunter who complicates his life somewhat. Years pass and Sebastian (and the demon Sarmodel ) is called back because the Beast has returned and a bloodbath ensues. The lush storytelling full of wit and funny footnotes balances the gore and horror nicely. Full of ancient demons, historic figures, monsters and fallen angels this debut has a historic backbone and a horror heart with GOOD OMENS humor. I loved the interaction between Sebastian and his resident demon Sarmodel. Seasoned writing that makes it hard to believe this is a debut. 4 1/2 stars |
