An unusual and fanstastical gay romance with historical undertones and a show of the best and worst humanity has to offer. The illustrations help illuminate the setting. A fantastic cross between THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and THE SHAPE OF WATER. 4 stars
Tabitha is living with her grandfather and his partner in Paris. One of her new friends is none other than Julia Child and together they explore the joys of French cooking and solving murders. Tabitha has an unusual talent for stumbling upon dead bodies and this time it is in a couture house. The gossip on the street is that the house of Dior is responsible but Tabitha and her new model friends feel this is not the case. The bodies begin to stack up but Tabitha is not deterred. We get the joy of Julia Child's now famous french cuisine, the view of a young American in Paris and the exciting world of couture fashion houses in post war Paris plus a mystery all wrapped up with a kiss. Cozy but not too much and full of historical tidbits this will appeal to many. 4 stars This book is designed to help you jump start the practice of journaling or offer prompts to those who have stalled as well as offer inspiration in the form of essays by famous and unfamiliar creative people. The featured essays were very interesting just by themselves and the prompts were varied and introspective. This book will appeal to a variety of people and a variety of ages - whether they are looking to lead a more creative life or want to be more present.
4 stars Wickedly funny and full of scheming men lusting for control, wickedly smart women looking for ways to get around those men and one boy who doesn't know where he fits in or who he really is. John thinks that his worst problem is dealing with a mean goat until the nobleman to take him from what he thought was home and the people he thought were his family to train and live as Edward the Earl of Warwick and next descendant to the crown. John is a quick study but between changing names, locations and trying to keep up with who wears the crown on their head and who has lost their head entirely is complicated for both John and the reader. As he is moved changing names and guardians his one true love is cast out of reach and he begins to distrust those entrusted with keeping him safe. Fans of Hillary Mantel, Maggie O'Farrell and anyone who can pick through the confusing cast of characters in the British monarchy (family trees included) will really enjoy this tale of political intrigue with Chaucer- like wit. 4 1/2 stars Wow! This book dove into so many fears - of not succeeding in life, of a parent's anger, of Roger Rabbit and more. A young comedian who is grappling with the loss of the parent who abandoned her ends up trying to help a five year old runaway. Suddenly their lives are upended by violence and supernatural happenings that no one can explain. Gruesome yet effective I listened to this and had to drive around the block a few times to calm my breathing. A blending of childhood fear combined with STRANGER THINGS mind ability is a powerful and scary thing. The afterward by the author was a treat unto itself. 4 stars
There is something that always makes me smile when reading Emily Henry's quirky romances. The characters are far from perfect, they usually don't love each other at first sight but there is always a sense of not giving in or giving up (even though we the reader knows it will have a happy ending). This story begins with Alice who is a ghostwriter and is given the job of a lifetime - to write the story of an heiress who has been hiding from the world and whom Alice has been obsessed with since childhood. Sounds perfect until she goes for the interview and finds out that an award winning ghostwriter is also trying for the job. They have a month to each work with their future boss and then she will decide who gets the job. They are on a small island and bound to run into each other at every turn. Can the emotionally reserved Hayden and the effervescent Alice not share what they know and resist each other to score the job? I listened happily to the audiobook which gave me sore cheeks from smiling while driving. An excellent narration and the perfect pick to take your mind off the rest of the world. 4 1/2 stars Four women are among the few first female class admitted to Oxford University just after WWl . The country is healing from the great war and women are fighting to regain the independence they had briefly during the war while also finding their role in this new world. These women hail from a variety of homes and backgrounds yet all are searching for independence. They will get pushback from the professors and the male students which just cements their support and friendship of one another. A touching study of female friendship, courage and the changing roles of women after WWI. This will appeal to historical fiction readers of MISS MORGAN'S BOOK BRIGADE, THE ALICE NETWORK and books by Jennifer Chiaverini. 4 stars Happy book birthday to WILD AND WRANGLED by Lyla Sage
Another hot romance in the ranches of Wyoming. A wedding is a cause for celebration unless the groom doesn't show and the bride to be locks herself in a bar bathroom with a bottle. It is a small town and everyone is either related to or connected to each other for better or worse so it is Cam's old high school boyfriend who gets her heart thumping. Thinking of their future and not their past isn't easy and this fun romcom looks at unusual families and real life entanglements very well. This is the fourth book in the series but you will have no trouble starting with them out of order. There is a minimal amount of spice and lots of sugar to keep you happily entertained. 4 stars Ruth has been quietly robbing banks with a computer code of her own design helped by a couple of accomplices. Keeping low in towns and places she thinks they won't look for her Ruth tries to stay one step ahead. Can Ruth outwit her pursuers and stay out of prison? The hunt is on and they are close. Dual POV alternating between Ruth and Mike this is a high speed chase that moves quickly and keeps readers fully engaged. 4 stars
