It has been 10 years and the adults are still together and not much has changed but their children are now teenagers. The past rears its ugly head. The story flows easily with little crumbs dropped along the way to a "wow" of an ending. This is a solid sequel that feels like running into an old friend you haven't seen for a while and catching up over coffee. Some drama, some gossip and plenty of angst. 4 stars

A Moroccan boy apprenticed to a saddle maker ends up caring for an Arabian mare who steals his heart only to have her stolen from him and pressed into service headed for the French battlefields. Shellshocked she escapes to a farm where a young French woman and her disabled brother as well as a British Veterinarian care for her. As the Germans edge closer she flees losing the horse and her brother. They are separated by battle lines and trauma as they come full circle. For anyone who has ever lost their heart to a horse and readers who enjoy stories of humanity and compassion during war - this is for you. Readers of HORSE by Geraldine Brooks and THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE will enjoy. 4 stars  A coven of witches ready to choose a new leader but the most logical pick is on the outs with the coven and wanting to give up her magic. Her best friend draws her into a dangerous quest involving a possible portal through the empty frames in the Gardner Museum in Boston. As they enter into this new dimension filled with danger at every turn and a lone witch whose motives are unclear, it could be that they are in over their heads. Modern day witchcraft meets the real unsolved art theft meets a marsh witch with revenge on her mind and warring covens. Readers of A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES and Dan Brown's books that mesh real art with magic will fall in love. It will appeal to young adult and adult audiences. 4 stars  It started with three teen girls - two mean and one who was nice. It ended with two and an innocent paying the price. Now as adults they are forced together when a true crime show is being filmed about their friend and the town's biggest tourist draw grand opening collide. Nicollet fled her little town and is now a reality tv mean girl maven while Barb stayed in Seaside as a journalist covering small town events but making real money secretly trashing reality tv stars. The police don't want to do anything to risk scaring away tourist money but the deeper Barb digs she may have found a strange connection to other missing women. There is no shortage of small town drama, inappropriate behavior, karma and serial killer fear here. The audiobook kept the intensity throughout and it will appeal to true crime as well as fans of LISTEN FOR THE LIE. Even though this is the second book in a series, it easily works as a standalone. 4 stars  A woman confesses to the murder of her stepmother to prevent her from actually going through with it. The only problem is that she is indeed murdered while her stepdaughter is at the police station. Jemma has been manipulated and emotionally abused by her stepmother for years without her dad or anyone else taking her side. As more information comes to light and we find that there are more suspects than Jemma who may have had an issue with the murdered woman. A psychological maze that the police detective on the case needs to climb through while acknowledging the trauma that Jemma has endured. It portrays the police detective as being sensitive and able to bend the rules a bit. It helps that this time the stepmother really was nasty and no one is mourning her demise. 4 stars  A spin on the horrific killings that plagued Victorian London at the hands of Jack the Ripper and the added element of a secret society plagued by a disease that takes hold of them at the full moon. Innocent Caroline ventures to the rougher side of London in search of her older brother who failed to send for her once he had found a place in London. Arriving without means she takes a job at the building where he used to live but finds little trace of him or where he has gone. As Caroline learns more about the Whitechapel Full Moon Society and their strange rules she finds herself intrigued and uncertain about whether she will ever find her brother and answers. Based on the only surviving victim of the Ripper this is also a story of how dangerous life was for women on their own. A well paced adventure that will resonate with historical fiction readers and horror/crime readers as well. 4 stars  A hot dark section of the London underground is enough to produce nightmares but for this group of riders a strange event occurred that none of them can explain nor forget. They come from all backgrounds and even the conductor is not spared. A sticky sweet smell, fetid stains on the chairs and a dark thing lurking in the darkness. Chapters alternate between each of the characters and then once they reach out to each other they must work together if they have any chance at eliminating the evil. Guaranteed to keep you off the commuter trains! The perfect horror mix - evil mysterious monster, you are powerless to fight back and the fear is real but you can't remember why. 3 1/2 stars  I love a little sarcastic wit with my horror and Chuck Wendig always delivers. A very old and diabolical family is in crisis (think SUCCESSION) where the eldest son is not thrilled with taking over from dear old dad but Mourning Mayne doesn't have much to say about it. He is out fighting for souls alongside other fiends, a serial killer and damaged people. Wendig's fans will be happy! 4 stars  A family vacation home in Verona Italy with three siblings and family sounds delightful and it is until the youngest calls her older sister and brother asking for help because she just ran over a man and killed him. They do the unthinkable and bury the body, clean up the scene and erase any trace that they have been there. He is a stranger and when they leave to go back home to England they pray that it is over. Sadly it is just beginning. Guilt, remorse, loyalty and panic set in as the investigation wears down on all of them. As more of what happened leaks out the family unit begins to break down and someone must take the blame. This is a taunt thriller that begs the question of just what are you willing to do (or hide) for those you love. Where is that line in the sand? 4 stars  A grief stricken family travels to a remote French estate to check on an elderly aunt. It has been many years since Morwenna has been to the chateau and that was before her first husband's and uncle's deaths. What she finds now is ruin and superstition especially with All Hallows Eve approaching. Her family may be in more danger than just a simple ghost story when the truth comes to light. This is a classic gothic ghost story that blurs the edges of reality, perception and myth in the minds of the reader. Guaranteed to deliver chills in the night for readers of DIAVOLA, HOUSE OF LAST RESORT and SANCTUARY. 4 stars  |
