Christine uncovered some shocking truths about her father and grandparents. Growing up her father was very quiet about his upbringing, parents and siblings but he had wonderful stories about growing up in Hawaii but even in his young years nothing about his parents or siblings. Over a span of decades Christine searched for information about her family history but nothing could reconcile the warm and caring father she knew with the cold Nazi family of spies he grew up in. The audio was incredible and gave enough human interest background to balance the families horrific spying for the Japanese and Germans helping to guide the attack on Pearl Harbor. For fans of THE AMERICANS, war crimes, the downfall of Pearl Harbor and the aftermath of war. 4 stars

Meddy is a mortal born of two lesser immortal sea gods in Poseidon's sea kingdom. She is the youngest of three sisters and isn't expected to get much attention or marry well but when she catches the attention of the Goddess Athena and is taken on as an acolyte in her temple she thinks she has found her purpose. She is an innocent and life in the city has its own challenges as does attention she is getting from Poseidon. When a misstep angers the Gods Meddy's fate is cast and she becomes Medusa. Where her dreams and hopes end, her rage will save her. A powerful blend of myth, abuse of innocence at the hands of powerful Gods who use mortals as disposable currency and playthings. A feminist tale that will capture your attention from the first page. Readers of classic Greek and Roman mythology wanting to hear from a different viewpoint will enjoy this. 4 1/2 stars
It is Nils Vik's last day and it passes the same as every day before it - at the helm on his ferry.
We the reader ride along as he reflects on his life and the people he has encountered along the way. Superb imagery, soothing prose and quiet wisdom guides us down the fjord as he makes peace with his memories and gets ready to see his beloved wife once more. Frode Grytten's writing is like that of Amor Towles - unassuming and elegant with each word carefully chosen. It is a beautiful book that will capture the heart of many different kinds of readers. 4 1/2 stars A cozy romantasy of a bad witch who now just wants to do good. Violet is the former thornwitch who has been doing the bidding of the evil sorcerer but with his death she has the chance to start over. If she can keep her secret past a secret maybe she can live the quiet life as a flower shop owner and put down roots. Even dealing with her grumpy shopkeeper landlord seems doable until a stranger comes to the village who could ruin it all. Delightful tale with a touch of spice and pet rocks. 4 stars

Claire is dying of terminal cancer and Elliot, her husband of many years has been caring for her and will continue that care until she is gone. They have had a good marriage, raised two grown children and grandkids and Elliot has not heard any complaints so it comes as a shock when Claire's two best friends move in and move Elliot out to take over control of her care. Suddenly he is living in a strange house without his wife and with limited visitation. Everyone is telling him he got a raw deal but what can he do but respect Claire's wishes? A very honest if not brutal look at the process of impending death, friendship, love and marriage. When do you honor the dying person's wishes and when do you stand up for your own needs - it is a tricky business. This book will appeal to readers of family / marriage dramas and deep characters like those of Ann Patchett and Elizabeth Stroud. 4 stars
Fern has left her home and bookshop behind to join her old friend Viv and help with a new bookshop in another town. After a disagreement and too much drinking Fern ends up a stowaway in a legendary bounty hunter's cart. Somehow Fern ends up becoming a useful travel companion while she sorts out how or if she wants to return to bookselling. Another delightful fantasy that is cozy and full of adventure and danger featuring a much swearing bookseller with her feisty talking breadknife, a gentle and noble Oath Maiden elf and an interesting silverware thief prisoner. I listened to the audio version which made me laugh and totally escape the anxiety of real life. This is part of a series but is just as enjoyable as a standalone. Excellent narration! I can't wait for the next story. 4 1/2 stars
A group of women take charge of those women in need. Rain or shine The Humpty Dumpty Club ferries women to doctor visits, shopping or whatever they need. With one of the group out for a spell it puts a big strain on the remaining members. A sweet slow story of community, friendship and good hearted women. It made me hopeful that there would be a group like this if I ever needed it and sad that those days are not far ahead. I have not read the other books that feature some of the characters but that did not stop me from enjoying this as a standalone. Fans of Elizabeth Strout will enjoy. 3 1/2 stars
