21 year old Ellory gets a full free ride to Ivy league Warren University and she is not sure why. Within weeks she is dog tired, feeling insecure and doing her best to steer clear of the annoying senior Hudson. Oh, she also thinks she is losing her mind. Strange things are afoot and she has this nagging sense of deja vu. She has never been there before but she somehow knows menus of local restaurants etc. With Hudson's help she needs to figure out what is going on and not fall for him. This dark academia delight stands out for its great character development, fast moving plot full of required but unexpected twists and smart writing. The author takes into account the added drama and challenges of non-teen scholarship students who can't afford (literally) to mess up , drop a grade or get into any trouble as well as themes of racism and elitism. Prepare to fly through this one.
Fans of Donna Tartt, ATLAS SIX by Olivia Blake and NINTH HOUSE by Leigh Bardugo will enjoy this. 4 1/2 stars

Vera is whisked back from present day to Camelot after Merlin explains that she really is a version of Guinevere who has been kept safely in the future. Recovering her memories through magic is not going well but with help she is able to pass off being Guinevere even with frequent swearing, standing up for herself, her fondness for long distance running every morning and even introducing the game of rock, paper, scissors to court. Lurking in the shadows is the knowledge that she may be involved in an attempt to kill King Arthur and if she doesn't recover her memory soon the kingdom will lose magic forever. A lively blend of myth, magic, romance and a modern woman with a mind of her own and a heart she doesn't trust. The first of three books that add a fresh breath to the Arthurian legends and a queen we can all get behind to lead. 4 stars The largest category in my best books of the year list is always general fiction. Drama and wonderful characters are the key. This year there were so many but these will stay with me. A GUARDIAN AND A THIEF by Megha Majurndar took me to India where a woman is desperate to get her visa so her family can flee during a crisis. Her path collides with a young boy also desperate to save his family. Breathtaking! WILD DARK SHORE by Charlotte McConaghy also deals with desperation in Antarctica where a woman searches for her husband and finds something more sinister in a family of survivors. The queen of family drama title goes to Catherine Newman for WRECK. A family in crisis looks to each other for strength and a laugh. SO FAR GONE by Jess Walter proves that it is never too late to be there for your kids. An estranged father/grandfather takes on a cult to save his family. One of my favorite authors brightens my day and breaks my heart at the same time. Fredrik Backman's MY FRIENDS is a testament to friendship, loyalty and passing the torch. An artist's painting gives a young girl hope as his friends take her under their wing.
One of my favorite genres is historical fiction. This year I enjoyed many time periods and places but these captured my heart. THE ANTIDOTE by Karen Russell is a harrowing tale of life in Nebraska at a time of depression, drought and now dust storms. It follows a Prairie Witch who is tasked with keeping secrets for a price. THE LISTENERS by Maggie Steifvater moved me in many ways. A secret romance, a resort hotel in the mountains that is taken over by the government to house German POWS are the heart of the story but nature and the healing waters at the resort also play a big part of the atmosphere. I also really enjoyed ATMOSPHERE by Taylor Jenkins Reid for the women's perspective and early space shuttle history. Riveting!
I always struggle with the list of best books of any given year. Here are the fantasy books I enjoyed. BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL is a classic dual timeline of vampires by V.E. Schwab. DEATH OF THE AUTHOR is a fable told within the story of an author who uses a super charged prosthetic that changes her life. Nnedi Okorafor is a fabulous storyteller. Just for fun - Travis Baldree's latest BRIGANDS & BREADKNIVES takes fairytale creatures and a medieval setting to showcase bravery, love, friendship and a midlife crisis in a truly unique way. Pure enjoyment!
Miv and her two best friends decide to keep a list of suspicious people to uncover a serial killer that has been brutally murdering young women and hopefully prevent Miv's family from moving away. This poignant coming of age story highlights all the big feelings of puberty including what to do when your two best friends start to mean more to each other than just friends, dating, becoming more aware of your parent's activities, mom's illness and more. The investigation leads them behind the scenes as they discover uncomfortable truths about the adults and their classmates. This is a heartfelt coming of age story that reads like a softer version of Chris Whitaker's books or Stephen King's STAND BY ME or if Judy Blume wrote a murder mystery. 4 stars A National Geographic journalist provides us with a beautiful glimpse into one of the harshest landscapes on Earth - the Arctic Circle. Neil Shea begins looking for the effects of climate change on the people, animals and land but it evolves into a tender story of kindness, perseverance and hope from the people who live there and who depend on this fragile ecosystem. He goes into the history and culture through a wide sweep of the Arctic from Alaska to Finland. It is obvious that telling this story and his experiences meant alot to him. It is educational, entertaining and a call to action all at once and will appeal to nature lovers, people concerned with the effects of climate change and the history and anthropology of an area less explored. It might also serve as a travelogue for the hardy or for the armchair variety! 4 stars Aleys flees from her home to escape a forced marriage and is left with one of the few choices for a woman in 13th century Bruge - give herself to God. She wants to join the friars but must recruit some other women before that can happen and finds safe haven in an unconventional group of women of weavers who follow their own religious order - the Beguines. There is a dangerous underground movement within this group that of translating religious text from the required Latin (which most men read) to Dutch. A practice that is punishable by death if they are caught. Aleys spends her time searching to hear God even as powerful men seek to destroy her and the Beguines. She remains devout as some want to make her a saint and some want to burn her at the stake. A tale of quiet revolt, power struggles in the church, feminism and women protecting women despite the clear danger. The writing feels very authentic and will resonate with women both rebel and religious plus fans of Katherine J. Chen's JOAN or Phillipa Gregory. 4 stars Marlowe's best friend and soul sister Nora were joined at the hip until Nora mysteriously vanished one night from Marlowe's upstate New York family home. The hole in her heart never healed and the wound is reopened when a body surfaces on the family estate decades later reopening Nora's case. The chapters bounce from their childhood to present day. Marlowe is determined to find justice for Nora and is willing to poke around until she finds answers. The coming of age story and their deep friendship with tight family connection balances against the investigation, bitter feelings and dangerous conclusions. The moody and sinister woods are the perfect backdrop for the safety of the house and family but we know that secrets never stay buried. This debut will appeal to readers of coming-of-age stories like THE PHOEBE VARIATIONS and MARYJANE as well as tight murder mysteries of Lisa Jewell and Chris Whittaker. 4 stars Multi layered historical story of war and lost family. Billie Walker is a fearless private detective in Australia who helps women free themselves from disastrous relationships but her last case didn't go as planned. When she finds some papers containing a family secret and needing a break she hops on a cruise headed to Naples Italy with her mom and mom's companion in tow. She searches for answers to her family's past while evading a criminal and danger from her last case. I really loved Billie's story but did not connect as much with the back story and family secrets. This is one of a series of Billie Walker books and I am sure fans will enjoy this new episode. 3 1/2 stars |
