Henry VIII in all his glory is played out in this modern retelling. Harry is good looking, charming and very rich so he has his pick of all the beautiful women in London. He is already married to one of them but sadly just can't seem to stop himself from sampling the other delights, young and old. While we follow Harry's escapades the watch the women line up and then fall we can't help but see the parallels to the former King of all England. And, like that overactive monarch before him, we wonder if he will ever be content and learn true happiness before it is too late. His children are the ones who really need him and are most affected by his childish revolving door of wives but when you don't care about the king, you don't care what happens to his kingdom. The author proves once again that there is no excuse for male bad behavior no matter the time or place.

An amazing story of survival, human decency, and unspeakable violence that pertains to today's unsettled world. Lydia and her young son are on the run after watching their family gunned down at the hands of a powerful narco kingpin. Knowing that they are not safe in Mexico and that their only hope is crossing the border to the US they are suddenly put into a world they know nothing about. Lydia and Luca's journey and experience will change you and the way you look at the conflict at the border. Even knowing that this is a work of fiction the truth and violence at the border and the people forced to make this journey feels all too real. Thank you for allowing me as a reader to walk a mile in their shoes. Not only is this one heck of a good thriller but it will also appeal to readers who want to understand a powerful story from someone else's perspective.
Victorian detectives in Pompeii in 1902 and a parallel story of a poetess in Pompeii in 79 AD. Lady Emily and her husband are on vacation with friends and as is their habit, run into the murder scene of a New York journalist found encased in plaster. Giving us an excellent history of the Pompeii ruins and Roman life, this story also has the added sleuthing of the Victorian power couple. The additional story of a former slave who yearns to be accepted by Roman society and has a true talent for epic poetry was also interesting and tied nicely into the 1902 story line. The narrator pulled off a number of female dialects and male voices convincingly. My thanks to the publisher for the review copy.
A horrible tragedy occurs when an airplane falls from the sky leaving one young boy alive and alone. Edward has lost his whole family and even with his aunt and uncle taking him to their home and the intense friendship he has with the girl next door, he still feels alone. Being the sole survivor carries a huge weight as Edward discovers. He and Shay fight to find meaning and a direction in all the chaos and hopefully find a way forward. It is a story of profound sadness and grief but there is also hope, kindness, and clarity. Delicately handled and emotionally charged, the experiences of those on board the plane and those left behind are profound and will stay with you for a long time after you close the book.
A wonderful addition to the western genre but with a female lead. Mary Pearl and her sister grow up in the wilds of Arizona where you have to be tough, have horsemanship skills above and beyond and dream of raising a family and living the hard life your parents had. Mary Pearl has other ideas about where her life wants to take her and they don't include working a ranch or hosting teas. She goes off to school to get an education and her feminist ways don't always sit well with her family or the suitor she left back at home. An adventure that will have your heart yearning for open skies while applauding the bravery of Mary Pearl leaving what she knew and aiming for much more.
A solid 3 1/2 stars. This was a slow burn that finished as a forest fire for me. 1941 in a remote part of Alaska is where we find Elizabeth with her young daughter and husband living a quiet existence until the day a stranger flies in and changes their lives forever. Elizabeth has almost given up discovering what really happened to her twin sister who went missing when they were in their teens. For everyone else, it is a closed case with no leads until the stranger comes to town and shakes up the quiet community in a brutal way. There is much danger and a huge risk but he may be the only one to provide Elizabeth with answers, so this is bait she can't resist. A superbly told dark, cat and mouse game that will keep you guessing to the very end.
A plane crashes in a remote mountain area and the only survivor is an elderly woman totally unprepared for what lies ahead. Clovis's courage and determination to survive will get her far but when she needs help the most she finds it from a very unlikely source. Ranger Debra Lewis is not what you would call a people person and doesn't really fit the mold of a Park Ranger. She is convinced that Clovis is out there and is determined to keep up a search that seems hopeless. During the search, she will begin a strange relationship with a man and his teenage daughter that will bring her a little closer to understanding who she is and what she wants. Love, loss and the human desire to not be alone have a say in this unusual survival story.
A futuristic space jaunt where a lone wolf female ship captain takes in a young stowaway and then agrees to keep him in space to keep him safe - if she can. Time is relative in space and because of that you don't always trust your memories but the bond between Nia and the almost mute boy makes that leap through space. The language is very poetic and the characters are more developed and that helps to separate it from other science fiction. This will appeal to readers who don't usually read science fiction.
Once the water was everywhere and we used it for everything never knowing it might not be there someday. Part apocalyptic climate horror story and part a love story that endures all. THE END OF THE OCEAN is about two groups of people who never meet but whose lives are intertwined by water.
Signe lives in the moist land of Norway surrounded by pristine forests, rivers, and lakes fed by pure glacier water and her family is torn apart when she and her father take measures to protect the water and Signe's mother and others take the side of the developer. The second story takes place in the future where David and his young daughter are trying to survive in a world without enough water where hunger, disease, and thirst is an everyday nightmare. Love, climate change and family are all explored in this deeply moving story of one woman's fight to prevent her world from becoming extinct. Perfect for fans of STATION ELEVEN and other stories that warn of a world gone crazy. Abu Laith dubbed the Father of Lions gave his life to keeping a ragtag little group of animals alive in a war zone. With the constant danger of shelling, ISIS, the animals being consumed for food, Laith and a handful of others, kept watch and found ways to take care of three lions, a bear and her cub, a handful of monkeys and birds. He also found a way to get them out of the Mosul Zoo even though it meant never seeing the lion cub he raised again. This is an amazing story of how an animal lover without a background in veterinary science kept these animals alive with courage and love.
