A dark fairy tale of obsession and the need to escape from what we cannot control. Indigo lived in a beautiful manor home surrounded by woods where she and her best friend and soul sister Azure would do what they could to become worthy and join the Fae in the Otherworld. While Indigo demanded absolute loyalty and could be cruel at times her welcome into Indigo's house and away from her own kept her safe and sane growing up. Fast forward years later and Indigo has found her prince and married him on the condition that he would never pry into her secrets (of which there were many). Fairy tale or not we all know how that will end. When they travel back to Indigo's childhood home it all begins to unravel and her bridegroom just can't help himself. Dark with a house that feels more alive than its inhabitants at times and plenty of doom and gloom, this elegantly told tale offers up its own bit of relationship advice. For Chokshi's many fans as well as those of Holly Black, Marisa Meyer and Silvia Moreno-Garcia. 4 stars Varina has a big crazy Italian family where she worries about her kids , running the family business and taking care of her mom Sylvia. When Sylvia and Varina's daughter hatch a plot to fix up her up with any eligible bachelor in the area, tensions mount and it backfires finding love for someone other than Varina. This is first and foremost a book about love in its many forms. Secondly it is a funny book about big messy caring families. I loved the side bar about how Jersey Italian slang was born. It is fascinating to see how the words were altered and you will learn some new vocabulary in the process. A fun happy mess of a family that will appeal to many readers. 3 1/2 stars
In 2000 Patrick Bringley was 25 and working for the New Yorker as a journalist at the cusp of his career when two things happened - his brother died from cancer and he realized he hated his job. This is when he went for an interview for a guard's position at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and found two things - peace and fulfillment. A beautiful memoir of family, grief and finding your passion in an unexpected place. Patrick's decade spent at the museum not only gives us an inside look at one of the world's most phenomenal places but also a new way to experience art and art lovers. This is a must read for New Yorkers and museum groupies but also for those of us that seek beauty from the past as a way to explore our own soul. 3 1/2 stars
Nisha has power- the kind that comes from money. Sam does not feel that kind of power and is struggling to keep her job and her marriage. A gym bag mix up will change both of these women's lives. Sam has to wear the designer jacket and stiletto heels that are in the gym bag to her client pitch. The effect this has on her appearance and attitude lands her a few nice accounts. Each of them will find inner strength and learn that everyone needs help now and then. Good friends and a determination to get it together prevail. While clothes are said to make the man it seems that power heels bring out tough smart women who are tired of getting stepped on. Themes of female friendships , mothering as well as a great story of fighting for what you want. 4 stars
Lucky is not feeling very lucky trying her best to take care of her feisty grandmother, pay the overdue rent and her dead end job. She thinks that going to an interview at Venco might just turn their fortunes around so she packs up Stella and they make the journey from Canada down to Salem. What she finds there is not just a strange job offer but a new community of empowered women and a crazy cross country search for magical spoons and the final witch to complete the coven. Stella is a force of nature fitting right in with this unusual group and eventually Lucky follows her heart and gut and signs on. With a deadly hunter on their trail and witch driven radar they are down to days to find the last bit to complete the circle. Fun, irreverent and a clear choice for readers of UPRIGHT WOMEN WANTED, PLAIN BAD HEROINES and Alice Hoffman's beloved witches of Eastwick. 5 stars
Ezra is average looking with failing eyesight and a quick mind. Orson is gorgeous, outgoing and slippery. This original odd couple meet at a teen reform camp and begin a strange friendship, partnership and sometimes love affair. Little scams turn into the one BIG one when they form a corporation that promises bliss for life in one little machine. It sounds too over the top to be believed but they are wildly successful. As every con man, swindler, grifter and pyramid scheme corporation knows - there is a sucker born every minute. Dry wit and a breakneck pace that can be tough to keep up with at times, anyone who loves a good con or quirky couples will find something to love here. 3 1/2 stars
A haunted house meets a haunted man and his two daughters when he answers a strange want ad for a job. Just live in the house and report on any paranormal events the owner of Spite House tells him.
At least it will get Eric and his girls out of living in their car and give him much needed income. Eric is doing his best to be a good dad. Spite House is the perfect example of a haunted house - it sits on a hill, it is too narrow making it look weird and it was built to irritate neighbors and upset townspeople. Think THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE but told in multiple point of views in flashbacks which can be confusing. 3 stars Two families found on both sides of the tracks collide when a wealthy man goes missing in 1940's Trinidad. The Saroop family lives in absolute poverty in a shanty town while the father Hans works for the wealthy Changoor family. Dalton and Marlee Changoor own a booming sugarcane farm but when Dalton goes missing we start to see cracks emerge signaling that all is not paradise but this opportunity may signal a change of fortune for Hans. The language and descriptions of island life are authentic and mesmerizing. The body of the story is devoted to class structure, dueling religions and underlying violence of all sorts. We see how all of it affects the parents and how it is handed down to the children to sort out. 4 stars
