Elle meets Parker at a nightclub and sparks fly but they are the wrong kind. She forgets about him until while housesitting for her sister she discovers that he is her neighbor. He needs a fake girlfriend for the summer and she needs someone to show her New York City for the screenplay she is writing. A win-win until they get over those pesky first impressions and really learn about each other. Classic enemy to lover with sparkly prince in shining armor vibe but also a clear sense of how complicated people are. Each of them has to work out what is important and then get past it even when we are rooting for the fairytail ending. The other part of the love story is to NYC itself with all of the fantastic locations. The author clearly loves the city and I wanted to reread this book while walking the city taking in the magic. Fans of Emily Henry will love this well written romcom with a twist. 4 stars

A dark tale of twin sisters, marriage and madness. When an ancient body is discovered in a bog Sarah and her husband are eager to study it. Soon Sarah succumbs to fever, hallucinations and begins to waste away craving blood. Her sister Lucy comes to her aid as her advocate against the men trying to have her committed. An eerie blend of gothic history, sapphic love, possession and horror. Once again we see women confined and deemed mad by the men out to control them. Blood and guts are everywhere in this but it is fitting given the storyline. This is perfect for readers of THE HISTORIAN, PLAIN BAD HEROINES and tales of women institutionalized by men to gain control. 4 stars The basic storyline is two adults involved in a six year affair that up until this night has been very carefree and all about sex. That changes as the night spent in a new high-end hotel room goes from lighthearted to freaking out trapped in their room during a fire. Nick is all about sex and in my mind less interesting than Jenny who begins to question the affair, her life and just about every other thing in the universe. It moves quickly and they start to panic (mainly Jenny) a bit after all the CNN reports. Crisis creates honesty and regret. The dialogue moves as fast as the story which is choppy but works. I think I would have rated it higher if I liked the characters but I didn't feel like I knew them well and judged them on a surface level which is all on me. 3 1/2 stars A Franco-American crime family living in Maine led by tough women now face the biggest test of their survival. Babs Dionne has always done whatever it took to survive. Her daughters and the rest of the family usually hold court in Bab's kitchen and know that her word is law as queen. She is full of contradictions -vicious but not without compassion, heartless to her enemies but a softie when it comes to her young grandson and an illegal drug queenpin and charity donor. From family drug issues, an inside mole, and an outside threat trying to take over her territory Babs has a lot on her plate. This is a tight balance with deep characters that reminded me of THE GODFATHER meets DEMON COPPERFIELD - a crime thriller with soul. 4 stars A con artist falls beautifully into taking on her wealthy employer's persona in Mexico. How could she not want Isabelle's life of privilege living in a huge beach estate. Sure she should have corrected the error but now she is in deep. Is the con artist about to be conned? While I had no love for Liz the fast paced story makes for a solid thriller the likes of THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY. 3 1/2 stars A mother to be's worst nightmare unfolds as Portland is struck by a massive earthquake. At 9 months pregnant walking across the chaotic and unstable city is not ideal but that is what she does. At every turn something can go wrong and does and yet she keeps going all the while reflecting on her marriage, upcoming motherhood and life going forward. An urban adventure/horror story that focuses on how fragile life is and how little control we have in a natural disaster. While I would not hand this to a pregnant woman this emotional roller coaster debut is well written, perfectly paced and presents an all too plausible disaster. Readers who wonder about end of the world scenarios and halfway learn survival skills will love this. 4 stars
A dark tale set in Arkansas in 1967 of abuse in the guise of love, sin in the guise of salvation and revenge in the guise of rattlesnakes and tough women. Genevieve runs from one bad situation to another after she loses her grandmother. She takes on an assumed name and becomes a dancer, snake handler in a tent church and circus until finally coming home. What she finds are broken people like the ones she knows all too well - a woman suffering from years of abuse by her husband now worries for her daughters, a young man who returned home damaged by the Vietnam war and others who are powerless against domineering men led by a violent self proclaimed reverend. Genevieve is dealing with her own ghosts but helps give the reverend a taste of his own religion. A powerful story of love and redemption where strong women try to break the chain of abuse by rising up and dispensing their own justice. Fans of Chris Whittaker and books like WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING will find much here to love. 4 stars This is not just a story of a train crash but a deep dive into the characters of everyone on the train. From the seven year old boy traveling alone to a would be anarchist as well as all the workers and the higher class passengers, the story brings all of them together from all walks of life and backgrounds. Like the train itself speeding along to disaster the reader can only get pulled into their stories and hope for the best. Well researched with wonderful notes at the end for further study. 4 stars
While I enjoyed the masterful writing of this epic western horror, it did take me more time than I had given to read it. The American West of 1912 was already a horror story especially for the indigenous tribes who were being relocated (robbed of their land), reeducated (robbed of their culture), hunted and starved. Add a vampire tale to this and it really was a horror. I loved the relationship between the pastor and the old Indian gentleman who comes to share his tale or confess. 4 stars Happy book birthday to KILLER POTENTIAL by Hannah Deitch
Evie is an over educated SAT tutor to a wealthy family. One day she shows up at their mansion for work and finds the parents murdered, the daughter unconscious as well a traumatized woman tied up. She and the woman do the only logical thing - they run. Pinned for a crime they didn't commit and out on the lam they steal, lie and break into whatever they can to keep ahead of the law. Along the way Evie and the quiet Jae begin to trust and fall for each other. A full throttle Thelma and Louise police chase by land and sea that plays on your emotions. Are they innocent or have they been driven to do these things out of desperation? A debut killer thriller with loads of potential. 4 stars |
