The latest science stunner from Blake Crouch has a story that could come out of today's headlines - diabolical DNA researcher takes matters into her own hands unleashing terror and making human hybrids out of her own children. Logan is a good guy who is really trying hard to hide from his famous mother's legacy by working with the gene police but nothing can prepare him for the direction his life has just taken. This is a genetic futuristic Jack Reacher/Jason Bourne/Terminator kind of thriller with a hero we love, super scary science explained in " Genetics For Dummies " writing style and people with freaky super powers. His fans will only be more in awe and I for one will be steering clear of any giant killer wasps I see. Fans of Andy Weir, Ernst Cline and Michael Crichton will be happy. 4 1/2 stars

Karin Resaint likes animals much more than most people so she is happy to take a job that puts her in remote areas analyzing near extinct animal species looking for intelligent ones to save. This sounds simple but it is anything but in this futuristic post apocalyptic world where humans have already screwed up almost all of the ecosystems and the majority of animal species are just a DNA sample kept in a lab. She is about to file her report on the highly intelligent venomous lumpsucker when someone responsible for messing up the lumpsucker's current habitat comes begging for her help.
Together they travel to other potential habitats trying to stay ahead of eco-terrorists and humans just trying to stay alive in the cesspool they created. Political upheaval, corrupt businesses, psychopath rain maker drones and more this stark look at where we are headed is delivered with dry wit and much sarcasm. Fans of the natural horror of Jeff VanderMeer will find much to love. 3 1/2 stars Miss Kitty Talbot was not planning to throw herself at the mercy of London's Ton and the season's most eligible wealth but needs must. Finding herself as head of an all female household with creditors banging down the door she has a small window to snag a wealthy husband and save the family homestead. She and the one sister who travels with her are not schooled in the ways of London society but Kitty soon deftly navigates around dowager mothers. Of course there is one person who seems eager to put up roadblocks. Witty dialogue that dances around the complicated steps of the exhausting social circuit and romantic leads that have a love/hate relationship, this is one sure to satisfy those Bridgerton binge readers and watchers as well as historical romcoms readers. 4 stars
A slim novel that packs an emotional punch. Leah has finally returned months late from a deep sea dive that went very wrong. Now her wife Miri is swinging emotionally back and forth from grief that Leah was lost at sea to the joy at her return and grief again that the old Leah she fell in love with might never be coming back. Both horror story and deep dive into a marriage, Leah's transformation is two fold both mentally and physically. She is dealing with the trauma of being trapped at the bottom of the dark ocean depths in a metal bubble as well as the pressure and the toll it takes on her body. There is darkness but there is tenderness as well making this an unusual look at the tides of love. 4 stars
There is nothing like a gritty crime story set in a remote small place that also happens to have some famous residents who also happen to be authors. Two books for one as we witness a serial killer with a personality disorder as well as none other than Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut whose legendary feud is captured as well as their take on the murder case. The late 60's saw young women having more freedom , young people were taking more chances with travel and this new fascination with all types of narcotic drugs. In sleepy Cape Cod Massachusetts life was still fairly quiet until two missing women and the Jekyll and Hyde young man behind it. Tony Costa held many different personalities - to the police he was a drug informer, to people in the community he was a supplier and to some of the locals he was a catch but underneath it all was a side of him that would prove to be the last sight of for several women. The police had ample opportunity to grab Costa but he proved to be slippery and able to outsmart them seemingly at every turn. For any fans of the early days of forensic science, true crime and the mesmerizing nature of killers like The Boston Strangler, Tony Costa and Charles Manson as well as behind the scenes look at two popular authors and the events that shaped their greatest works. 4 stars
Hannah wanted to be just like April from the moment they met at Oxford. She was the "It Girl" with all the friends, all the flair, the good looking boyfriend and all the right connections. When April is found dead by Hannah she is devastated but at least her testimony helped put away the killer. Years pass with Hannah and her husband (April's old good looking boyfriend) expecting their first child. When told that April's killer has died in prison Hannah feels a bit of relief until the reporter suggests that maybe the man convicted was actually innocent. The chapters flip back in time to re-examine what might have happened and take a deeper look into the old friend group which proves not just unsettling for Hannah but downright dangerous. THE IT GIRL is another example of why Ruth Ware is so good at mysteries that make you think as you fall down the rabbit hole with the main character. The perfect choice for readers of killer thrillers.
Another example of friends at work denying there is so much more to their relationship. Matt and Cadence are very talented at what they do which is why they make a kickbutt team until great opportunities at work threaten to break up their good thing. Both are aware and supportive of the struggles to perform to the high bar of their Asian-American parents while also following their own dreams. A romcom that is tailor-made for the "you can't have it all" new adults figuring it out.
