Eddie is 90 and never been kissed let alone married or had a longterm relationship. That all changes the day Bella comes into the charity shop where he works to drop off her dead boyfriend's things. The two hit is off and Bella needs a distraction so she works on getting Eddie's lips on someone else's. Eddie did have one love from college but never acted on it since Birdie married before he got the chance and now it is too late. Will Eddie find his happily ever after? Marianne Cronin understands the special and unique friendships between young and old in a way I have not seen from any other author. Humor and compassion go a long way to remind us that love doesn't have a date stamp, expiration date or age limit. A sweet story that will have fans of her previous book, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF LENNI AND MARGOT applauding. 4 stars

Fun little romp of 19th century medical schools and graveyards. How does a young man whose medical school costs outweigh his purse make needed coin? By supplying bodies to the schools for use in autopsies! It becomes easy money if you can handle the dirt, smell and danger of being caught.
This is a grisly look at early medical training that is interesting but not something you want to read in your doctor's waiting room. Snarky wit and authentic language makes this a delight. 4 stars By agreeing to help out fellow chef and friend Christian teach a weeklong cooking school Paul gets added to the menu and a heaping spoonful of trouble. While the injured celebrity Christian is supposed to pull his weight in appearances no one can complain when he turns up murdered. Each of the students as well as the staff are potential suspects and each have more secrets than a mystery meat casserole. Chapters open with recipes in this clever whodunnit that has Agatha Christie's TEN LITTLE INDIANS Michelin stars all around and will have readers sharpening their knives and appetite for more. A debut for Murrin whose seasoned background is a well paired red with this entree into fiction. This recipe for fun does for cooking shows what WHITE LOTUS did for International resorts and THE MAID did for high end hotels. 3 1/2 stars A stunning mix of Finnish mythology and adventure revolving around a young woman who must appease the gods to release her friend and other stolen girls bound to the underworld. Fast paced Viking style adventure, cautionary fairy tale, and deep love triangle all in one. 5 stars Today's genre faves for 2024 is romance. FUNNY STORY by Emily Henry is funny, charming and a winner in every way. A LOVE SONG FOR RICKI WILDE by Tia Williams is a romance blended in two time periods set in Harlem. OUT ON A LIMB by Hannah Bonham-Young challenges us to think beyond disabilities.
Thriller/Mystery genre covers much of what I read each year and these are just a few of what I loved this year. My overall fave was ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK by Chris Whitaker followed by GOD OF THE WOODS by Liz Moore and THE HUNTER by Tana French. They all have a tightly wound mystery and deep characters that break your heart and stay with you. (note: THE HUNTER is the second book with these characters but you can read it as a standalone).
Today is fantasy faves 2024 day. Escapism is the key whether it is to the rich world of Viking mythology in A FATE INKED IN BLOOD BY Danielle L. Jensen or a little girl cursed with a life of never ending travel in A SHORT WALK THROUGH A WIDE WORLD by Douglas Westerbeke, escape is a given.
My faves in 2024 included these non-fiction titles that taught and entertained. THE WIDE,WIDE SEA by Hampton Sides about Captain Cook and exploration/exploitation via the oceans, THE LIGHT-EATERS by Zoe Schlanger which dives into the amazing world of plant intelligence and GROWN WOMEN TALK by Sharon Malone MD which challenges women to speak up and become more involved about their health.
My favorite books of 2024 by genre. Today's fiction picks are deeply emotional as well as well written. THE HORSE by Willy Vlautin, SANDWICH by Catherine Newman and PLAYGROUND by Richard Powers.
For my best of 2024 I will group several favorites by genre. Today is historical fiction. JAMES by Percival Everett, PEARLY EVERLASTING by Tammy Armstrong, THE BRIAR CLUB by Kate Quinn and one with a touch of magic - THE WARM HANDS OF GHOSTS by Katherine Arden. Something for everyone and all beautifully written.
