A mother hears what no parent should - that her daughter has been the victim of a small plane crash in the Rockies and is presumed dead. Maggie, grief-stricken, doesn't believe that her daughter is dead so she carefully searches for anyone who has been a part of her daughter's life since they have been estranged. Allison somehow survives the crash but knows the worst is yet to come. Someone is after her to make sure she doesn't survive and it will take everything she's got to get down off the mountain to safety. The chapters flip between mother and daughter and become more intense with each turn of the page. A solid thriller that features a tough as nails young woman trying to escape the sins of her past and the mother who won't give up on her.

A young girl escaping a bad situation at home finds herself in a worse one when she signs on to become an au pair to a young well-off couple in a remote beach house estate off the English coast. Laura truly loves being with the little boy, Edwin and gets along well with his parents but then secrets lead to more secrets which lead to tragedy. Years later, after the death of their father, Edwin and his twin brother and sister begin to puzzle over what actually happened the night the twins were born and their mother threw herself off the cliff. As they press people for more information, the threats begin and all those secrets start unraveling. Dark and sinister with secrets as sharp and ragged as the coastal cliffs, you will be compelled to race through to the wow, yet tidy ending.
Every young person feels lost or insignificant at some point or another and that is why the doorway appears. For Katherine Lundy, never Kate, it offers a much-needed escape, friendship and order to the Universe that makes sense. This wonderful, magical world doesn't treat children as empty-headed nothings but instead offers them choices as long as they give back fair value. It does have some harsh consequences if you don't take care of your debts and some, like her friend Moon, may need more time to grasp the concept but Lundy embraces it and this world greedily. Without thought to the family that is left wondering where and for how long their child will be gone, Katherine travels back and forth. The only thing the door asks is if you are sure. Interesting, unique and thought-provoking, this slim volume is a fairy tale about the magical world children create to give themselves power and control. I will keep looking for those doorways, I'm sure.
If you dream of being a flapper, drinking bootleg gin while listening to Billie Holiday in a smoke-filled Harlem nightclub - this is the book for you. I have been a devoted fan of Lyndsay Faye since JANE STEELE but now I am at the stalker level. Whatever the historical period she is writing about, she creates such remarkable characters who speak intelligent snark and exudes charm and the language and setting are spot-on. You believe that you are in 1920's racially divided dangerous Portland where a single white woman on death's doorstep running from the New York mafia finds herself a new family of sorts and learns about the many faces of evil and love. Oh, dear reader, you will positively fall for Nobody James and the unusual gang at the Paragon Hotel. Plus, as an added bonus, I can now swear in Italian.
This is part of a series but you can read it as a standalone and the series continues after this one. This story begins in New York in the '50s where an ad man is given a hallucinogenic drug that opens up his world- it alters how he thinks and suddenly he craves it as much as the power and knowledge it gives him. But, he burns too bright and bad things happen. Fast forward to his grandson who learns more about the grandfather he never knew and the secrets he held. A breakthrough drug, secret CIA druggings, brilliant minds, and a dangerous conspiracy leads to the question of whether this dangerous drug was a mistake that was covered up in the late '50s or is it still out there. This is the kind of book that brings up more questions than answers and like the drug, you can't get enough.
