Harriet learns of the cruise after her husband's death and decides to take the paid for cruise to Alaska anyway. She is dreaming of Bernard and see him everywhere- literally, but others think she is slipping. It should come as no surprise when her daughter end up on the cruise and Harriet discovers another side to Bernard and his secret life. Harriet reflects on her life, her marriage and the Bernard she knew and didn't know and comes out stronger at the end. Interesting travelouge of the cruise itself and Alaska's wonders.
You will giggle, you will cry and you will admire Harriet's style.

House of Thieves by Charles Belfoure

New York City in the late 1800's and the head of a high society family has just learned of his oldest son's gambling debts and the price hanging over his family if that debt goes unpaid. Their ties to society are fragile but they are accepted in the the circle due to the fact that John Cross is one of the city's leading architects and his wife is a great beauty. John Cross will be forced into a life of crime using his knowledge of the grand mansions of the city to protect his family. What no one in the family suspects until it is too late is that each one of them is leading a double life on the darker side of the city. The debt never seems to be repaid while George's gambling debts continue to grow as the danger seems to escalate as fast as the size of the next daring robbery. This is a fascinating look at the lengths people will go to protect their family and how the lure of danger and darkness had a hold on even the seemingly innocent and well bred society.

The Scribe by Matthew Guinn

Post Civil War and racial tension has never been higher in Atlanta. A shunned detective is pulled back to Atlanta to solve some brutal murders that seem to be the work of a serial killer bent on making a statement about those who profit from a major exhibition coming to the city. He is paired with the first black policeman on the force who may be just a publicity stunt and could be considered a suspect himself.
Political intrigue, a fascinating time in this country's history and a good ole fashioned murder mystery make this one great read. You feel deeply for this troubled man who wants to avenge his family's hardships from the war and his own sad treatment from a city that he gave so much to. "The Scribe" reads like Caleb Carr mixed with "Copper" and asks the question - when a man has had everything taken away, will he still fight for what is right?

Hollow Man by Mark Pryor

Part of my bias is showing because Mark Pryor is a local author who finally is writing about Austin but...Dominic is a character you will love to hate and you will find yourself saying throughout the
book "oh no he did not just do that". This ex Brit part prosecutor, part musician and full time psychopath finds himself with a crime just begging to be committed and who better than those who know the law. As things heat up lies will be told, crimes will be committed and you will see both sides of this unusual character. Fast moving plot makes this a one sitting read that will have you laughing and shaking your head at the sheer audacity of this guy. Of course it will come as no surprise that it was all done just to get the girl. So excited for his author talk at our library on September 15th.

The Gilded Hour by Sara Donati

Sara Donati has a magical ability to pull the reader into a family dynasty and make you feel like you are one of them. The Bonner family saga skips a couple of generations to feature two young women who are doctors in New York City 1883, in a time of new industry, where waves of immigrants are coming from Europe and a chance for women to be more than just child bearers and homemakers. Anna makes her way trying to coax young immigrants into getting the TB shot to stop the spread of the deadly disease. She is fighting to retrieve a lost baby brother for her young Italian wards and a lawsuit that she has aided women who are dying from badly performed abortions. The other Seward doctor, Sophie, is a woman of color and in love with an upper class man who is dying and wants to marry her before he no longer can. Sara Donati has woven a tale where elegant meets immigrant, mixed race and religion, new science and old country traditions all come together in the great city melting pot. Perfect for fans of Diana Gabaldon and Ken Follet's family sagas.
