Magruder's Curiosity Cabinet by H.P. Wood

Picture Coney Island in 1904. A young British girl is wandering around after coming to the states on a ship and separated from her ill mother. She has no home, no money and no food. Kitty is taken in by the wonderfully diverse group of freaks who call Coney Island home. Soon she is a regular at Magruder's Curiosity Cabinet where she is taken in by a transvestite, half man and a con man. There is a storm coming and it arrives in the form of a plague where the inhabitants of the island are used as political collateral. This diverse group will try to save the freaks and carnies of Coney Island and at the same time help Kitty find her mom. It is a historic epic where politics and privilege rule over the city's underbelly. Corruption and disease try to win over compassion and love.

Fast paced thriller about an artist who hitches a ride with a wealthy family and power couple from Martha's Vineyard into the city on a private jet that ends in disaster. Scott finds himself in the ocean struggling to stay afloat and save the only other survivor from the crash, a young boy. He is a trained swimmer but it is still a miracle that he is able to swim to shore and save the boy. Life does not return to normal as the media and police are all over him for answers. The search for the wreckage at sea continues to keep pace with the wreckage of the survivors on land. There is a certain amount of survivor's guilt that keeps Scott a part of the boy's life who is now with his aunt and her husband. The cat and mouse game between the police and Scott, whose own disaster themed paintings make him suspect, builds throughout the book and continues to the thrilling conclusion of what really happened on board that plane. All things are revealed about the rest of the passengers at the last minute keeping the reader on the edge of their seat in crash position with their head between their knees.

A private school in what could be Victorian England where young men are exposed to and fight against sin in the form of smoke or soot. Imagine that every time you think about sin you leave a trace behind on your clothes, on your body or in the air. The world knows what you are thinking, or feeling and you will be punished for this. Young men of good upbringing come to the school to relieve themselves of this sin and one day a couple will discover that some of them are not what they claim to be. Such is the world of "Smoke". A group of two young gentlemen and a young lady find themselves at a crossroads wanting to discover the truth behind experiments and a cure for smoke.
Persecuted by the authorities and a zealous relative they go into hiding. They will soon discover that not all that smoke are sinners and some of the worst offenders remain hidden. Political intrigue with a Dicken's like feel make this a fantasy thriller with an altered historical story.

Like a guardian angel, the Fireman arrives on the scene and saves the innocent from the fire but who will save the Fireman. Harper is a nurse who is pregnant and has a problem - she has been infected with a strange spore that will cause spontaneous combustion. Her plan is to hide until after the baby is born and wait out this plague but when she doesn't go along with her husband's death wish the only option left for her is to run. The Fireman leads her to a secret colony of Dragonscale survivors and it is there she feels at home. As these groups seem to go the colony becomes radical and soon the leaders are pitting people against one another inflicting old world torture on those they deem unworthy. Harper's husband and his Klan like posse is on their tail as well. Harper must protect the people she has come to love as well as work as the colony's sole medical help. This edge of your seat thriller and smouldering love story is typical of Joe Hill who is a master at crafting truly frightening story lines with characters that you love.

Two Houston socialites in the 1950's are two sides of a coin. June and CeCe are as different as night and day - June parties till she drops, CeCe stays quiet and watchful and then cleans up the mess. June takes off with men without so much as leaving a forwarding address and CeCe is there to pick up the pieces and wait for June to return. This process begins when they are teens and continues into young adulthood. CeCe's mother dies young and she goes to live at Evergreen, June's family estate. What starts out as a kind gesture gets old when June's family depends on her to know June's every move.
Between June's disappearing acts CeCe will find love, get married and start a family. But every time June reappears her hold on CeCe reappears eventually threatening CeCe's once strong marriage. Both young women are broken and dependent on one another but CeCe's grip on June is too much. Interesting play of what is expected, following society rules, life in a butterfly jar and the cost of freedom.
