Fredrik Backman is magical and he takes ordinary characters that we would pass on the street and shares their thoughts, hopes and dreams with us. Such is this new novella where a grandfather sits trying to make sense of his last days and searching for a way to explain it to his grandson. The days get more confusing for him and we see how the faces blur as he forgets if it is his grandson or his son sitting next to him. He also tries to make sense of where things went wrong with his relationship to his son and so right with his grandson. We get all the emotion, confusion and love of a life well lived and the desire to get it right. Thank you, Mr. Backman for getting it right.

Two kids and their parents must flee Berlin as the Nazi's cast out the "undesirables". After paying double what others would pay and having to purchase a round trip ticket on what is clearly a one way journey, they board a ship bound for Cuba. Leo and Hannah don't want to leave their home but they do love the adventure on board until word gets out that the Cubans will ban them from docking and they may be returned to a country that clearly doesn't want them. What happens next will rip the families apart and will stay with Hannah for the rest of her life. The second story is how the descendants of Hannah's family find each other in a trip from New York to Cuba that will answer many questions and create many more. Ana and her mother have lost their father/husband to 9/11
and both sides benefit from the meeting. Bittersweet and heartfelt their story will resonate - family is everything, survival above all else and forgiveness for sins we have no control over. A young couple in Quebec find themselves caught in a web of magic and horror. Kay is an acrobat and goes missing on her way home from the show one night. Her husband cannot believe that she has disappeared into thin air and searches the city in vain all the while not even guessing that she has been spirited away by a puppet master in the darkened toy shop that fascinated her during their walks. Kay begins life anew as a puppet and soon begins to befriend the other puppets at night when they come to life. As hard as it is to fathom, her husband soon begins to believe that Kay is being held as a puppet and sets off to rescue her. Will the evil that has charmed Kay be stronger than her husband's love? Keith Donohue writes a frightening account reminiscent of Grimm's fairy tales and the magic will keep you up reading til dawn. Great Halloween reading!
Captain Kidd travels across the southwest delivering theatrical readings of old newspapers. He comes across a wagoneer with an unusual request- he has picked up a young girl who had been stolen and was kept by the Kiowa Indians and must now return her to her family. Johanna has been in captivity for years and remembers little of her "white" life. They must make the trek back through Indian territory and avoid men who would kidnap Johanna and sell her back to the Indians as well as all the other countless dangers of the untamed West. Reminiscent of "Lonesome Dove", you will fall in love with the honorable Captain and feel sorry for Johanna in her difficult transition back to so-called civilization.
What begins in fear and a sense of justice ends in love and family. This is my favorite book this year and a must for all Texans. |
