Armand Gamache is back but still in the doghouse - humiliated and demoted but still very much respected by most of his peers and now bosses. The lovely village of Three Pines with its lovable but quirky residents are also back and in the middle of flooding of epic proportion unless the banks of the Bella Bella river hold. There is another crisis brewing when Gamache makes a promise to a missing young woman's distraught father that he will find her. Sadly, the police are short on leads, time and energy. Another great installment in this beloved series and one that the first time reader will enjoy as much as the seasoned series follower. You will soon feel a delightful bonding with this genuine character and be crime solving right alongside Canada's finest.

The mystery and fate of the Romanovs are explored in this historical tale and may well be the first to include the perspective of the family's guards and executioners. The tale is told by one of the Romanov daughters who is wounded and somehow survives falling in love with the young man who rescues her. The other side of this mystery is sought after by the daughter of one of the guards who years later on his deathbed is racked with guilt and confesses to a crime that his daughter must decipher. The tandem story works beautifully apart and then later when the families and mystery are finally solved. The writing is lush and rich in detail about the Romanovs last days, the siege of St. Petersburg and the horrible conditions the Russian people had to endure during the war and after. While the fiction lover will appreciate the rich characters and storyline, the historian will appreciate the keen attention to detail and obvious research the author put in.  A poignant tale of the immigrant's nightmare and the heartbreak of being countryless. Their story is depicted so well and with such raw emotion that you can't help but feel a little bit of their pain. The story begins as Nuri and Afra are forced to leave their home in Syria due to the war. Sadly, just as they leave their young son dies in a bombing and Afra, an artist becomes blind. Nuri is just as traumatized but must find a way to get them to England as Nuri's best friend and fellow beekeeper has done months before. As they move from camp to camp, country to country each more foreign and their situation more desperate they are still gentle with each other and do kindnesses for their fellow travelers. Just as the bees have their colonies destroyed and must now search for a new world to begin again, Afra and Nuri must learn to follow the winds hoping to find a safe place to begin again. The book is heartbreakingly beautiful and a must read to understand what life must be like for those people who did not ask to be cast from their home but now find themselves in a strange new land and uncertain future.  Brussels 1943 and a group of resistance writers and fighters are picked up by the Nazis. The new Minister of Perception Management is a fan and has a unique proposal - write a paper with made up articles and news about how horrible the Allies are. The group knows their days are numbered as soon as the paper is printed so they decide to go out their way by turning the tables on the Nazis and producing their own satire paper at the same time. Their story is told by a young street urchin who helps sabotage the Nazis and lend help to the cause. A witty and quirky cast of characters whose plan to stick it to the bad guys will warm your heart and keep you guessing until the very end who exactly the bad guys are. This is based on a true story and many of the actual characters like Marc Aubrion are centerstage but E.K. Ramzipoor's debut breathes life into the little known story and makes it an epic tale of everyday heroes turning the tables.  Maeve and Orpen leave the isolation and protection of their Irish island to travel to Phoenix City and hopefully find safety in other survivors. There are a few problems with this plan - Maeve is sick and isn't getting any better, Orpen has no real idea where this city is and there is grave danger from the zombie-like creatures called the Skrake getting them first. Orpen has been trained by her now dead mother and Maeve and she will need all those lessons and more if she is to survive and then she meets the others. A cross between THE WALKING DEAD, THE ROAD and a bit of HANDMAID'S TALE morality, this horror story will not have you running off to the Emerald Isle anytime soon. Scary and violent but there is still a spot of hope for humanity in this debut.  A mismatched pair of Danish detectives must play an evil game of cat and mouse with a brutal serial killer. The killer is targeting young women brutally dismembering them and leaving behind a strange chestnut man doll nearby. Hess and Thulin must connect the dots and also see if these recent killings are linked to the disappearance of a Minister's daughter. Taunt, frightening and really dark as only a Scandinavian crime novel can be, this is sure to please fans of Steig Larson and Jo Nesbo. Soren Sveistrup has made the mighty leap from screenwriter to thriller novelist and we will never turn off the lights again.  What is scarier than war, a deadly epidemic or terrorist attack? The characters are genuine and mostly likable so you are rooting for the good guys from the first page. Not for the queasy stomach reader. WATERWORLD meets STATION ELEVEN, this novel shows the world's population existing in fear, distrust, disease and above all else, survival. With this many suspects, it tends to be a bit muddled as to who actually committed the murder and who just wanted to murder someone. They all are keeping secrets and since they haven't seen each other since college you can see it is a mess that the detectives get to wade through. Quick beach read with obvious ties to BIG LITTLE LIES and other women's "friendship above all else" books.  Few of us can truly understand what life must be like for a young girl pulled from her family in the Dominican Republic and the only home she has ever known, to be married off to an older man and dumped into a completely new world of NYC. No friends, no language skills, no means to support herself and no way to escape and go back home. Ana is smart and she will learn to survive and possibly thrive in this giant city. She has learned one lesson - trust yourself and only yourself. Ana is one of the thousands who want a chance to make something of their life and a better life for their future children and they are not afraid to work hard to achieve it.
