I loved this exquisite story of a child born in a theater in New York during the 40s. August learns to speak by hearing Shakespeare, he learns to read classics and what he thinks is normal behavior by watching the actors night after night, hidden in the rafters. He is innocent but he does have people looking out for him, the theater laundress who found him and an old London actor but it is not until he meets Penny that he finds true love. Penny, who is not exactly an angel and whose acting career leans more to the con artist side, and a small cast of characters help August learn life on the street.
It is a witty and wild romp through the upper and lower streets of New York. For fans of funny historical tales full of crazy characters and bursting with atmosphere, August March is the cat's pajamas!

Conor Knighton makes us realize that we have national treasures out there that may not look the same way to our grandchildren and great grandchildren. From the sheer joy and awe he feels by visiting each one of our National Parks throughout the course of one year to the awareness he shares of the fate of some the lesser known parks and the conservation plans within, we are caught between feeling ashamed of taking it all for granted and also wanting to book a family road trip across the country to see as much as possible. These parks are magnificent and the variety and beauty found there in one country is unparalleled. Conor Knighton's easy going style pulls you in immediately and offers equal amounts of his own experience with the history and nature lesson.
Mother and daughter are healers capable of great good but also able to create charms for those that do them harm. May Bell and her daughter Rue’s stories are told in alternating chapters ,slavery time and freedom time. After the war there is still a difficult time pulling away from what they all knew. Many did not trust that they were free or that relationship would not go back the way it had been. There is also a young preacher that comes into Rue’s life who will break away their connection to Rue and her healing and lead them towards God doing the healing. Fear, change, control, changing relationships and family are all strong themes as well as old superstitions leading to religion. The beautiful prose creates an authentic voice in this examination of the transition from slavery to freedom.
Sloane and four others teens with magic powers slayed "The Dark One" making them superheroes overnight. Ten years has passed and they have all had trouble dealing with celebrity but now a new wrinkle has occurred. They are sucked into a parallel universe where - gasp! their Dark One is still alive and causing trouble. It is up to them, mainly Sloane, to get rid of this force and get back home.
The beginning showed real promise of being a different spin on fantasy and I loved the characters and how they were dealing with all these issues and then came the other universe and I began to lose the story thread. It is the perfect blend of adult language and humor written within a young adult fantasy framework. I loved Roth's DIVERGENT series and think this will be a great bridge into books for the adult market. It read like a mash-up of Marvel /DC comic superheroes meets THE WALKING DEAD meets he who shall not be named from Harry Potter. Antonia is a recent widow- drifting on a turbulent sea and unsure of where a port is. Her sisters all look to her for guidance so when one of them, a particularly eccentric sister, goes missing they call Antonia. Others look to Antonia for guidance as well and she helps translate the migrant workers of her neighbor's farm. One of them needs more than a translation and Antonia soon finds herself helping a very pregnant Mexican teen who is lost in a country she is little prepared for. Caught between trying to be there for all of them and not losing herself in the process is difficult but in doing so she just might find the anchor she needs. Simple prose but vibrant and soul searching, this is a story of what it means to be a good person and trying to hang onto those ties of family.
