The next generation after DAISY JONES AND THE SIX. Welcome to the wild world of Mick Riva's kids and the life they have built in Malibu 1983. Nina Riva's famous party is about to happen but the surf beckons as if it were any other day. If they only knew that their lives were about to get much more complicated and be changed forever. It is the story of failed relationships, life in a goldfish bowl with paparazzi, sibling bonds and the sins of the father repeating themselves. This book reads like a standalone but is much more enjoyable if you have read DAISY JONES AND THE SIX. I would have enjoyed a few more days getting to know the Riva siblings. 4 stars

Take one 63 year old woman who has never really been out of her little Maine town but has a burning desire to see the Pacific Ocean, add a horse who needs a second chance, a faithful dog and no reason to stay in Minot after losing the family farm and you have the basis for this enchanting adventure. Annie Wilkins finds herself in 1954 with nothing left to lose and just enough money to make it tramping as she calls it as she sets out to travel cross country by horseback. What she finds is more attention is paid her than she expected, the mountains out west should be taken seriously and there is kindness from strangers wherever she goes and whenever she needs it. Elizabeth Lett's easy going writing style is perfect in the telling of this grand adventure and spunky determination of Annie to finish her quest. It is a story of a simpler time, a love of animal companions and the kindness of people. Fans of her other horse books will enjoy as will readers of Steinbeck's TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY. 4 stars
With a nod to all the magic of J.M Barrie's original story, this is a darker version of what happened after. Wendy, now a mother of her own and still missing her time in Neverland, witnesses her daughter being whisked away by Peter Pan. Instead of feeling helpless, Wendy goes off to Neverland to reclaim Jane. Neverland has changed from the innocent land of wonder she remembered to something much more sinister. Peter is not what he was either as both Wendy and Jane come to realize. The story immerses you in that feeling of innocence and childlike adventure and then reveals the creepy and manipulative danger. We also learn of Wendy's life after she returned home all those years ago and the themes of male dominance of women and the question of a women's place and mental illness are all explored. 4 1/2 stars
A rigorous training camp for witches is where Clara lives. While most there learn to control the weather depending on what season they are born into, Clara is a very rare Everwitch. She can control various elements and work her powerful magic year round. It also means she feels all the mood swings as the seasons change. The Earth is changing rapidly and it is growing more difficult for the witches to control these wild storms due to climate change. She is with a new trainer, a botanist witch named Sang and falls hard for him even though she tries not to. Her magic is powerful and it is dangerous to Sang for her to practice her magic but it is her powerful magic that is needed most to control the storms and unusual weather. This debut reads like a cross between white witch romance and a superhero story whose powers are used to battle crazy weather and climate change. Written for the young adult market but there will be plenty of adults who will enjoy the atmospheric writing style. 4 stars
Sammie is left to pretty much raise their difficult son due to her wife traveling and she resents it. She also resents the abuse from their son Samson and that her life is passing her by. She never really does anything to change the situation though and seems to react only after something happens. Their marriage is falling apart and Sammie's expectation of motherhood vs. the hard realities of raising a distant and violent son are taking their toll. A sad portrait of a messed up family. 3 1/2 stars
It takes a lot of guts to publish a novel that points to inequality in publishing. It takes a lot of talent to write a debut that cuts through all the niceties to understand what the day to day life was like for people of color in 2018 and might still be like today at some publishers. Nella works for a major publishing house and with the exception of a handful of people, all of the higher level editors and associates are white. Nella has aspirations of becoming an editor and has worked very hard to prove herself. This all seems to slip away the day that Hazel (the other black girl) joins the staff at Wagners. Hazel's friendship seems genuine at first but soon she starts ingratiating herself to Nella's boss, coworkers and the head of the company and Nella starts receiving notes telling her to leave. This insightful novel is not just about inequities in the industry but also has a riveting mystery which forces us to ask important questions and be entertained all in one. 4 stars
