1942 Australia
The gravedigger's daughter has only known hardship and violence in her young life especially since her mother left her with her drunk and abusive dad and uncle. Her mother's last lesson was to look to the sky and wait for it to bring her gifts. As Japanese fighter planes drop bombs on her town saving her from a worse fate, Molly sets off on a quest to the outback in search of answers from a legendary man who placed a curse on her family. Her unlikely companions are Greta, an actress with a gruff attitude but a heart of gold and Yukio, a fighter pilot who couldn't face bringing any more destruction into the world. Their journey will lead them into dangerous terrain but going home may put them in even more danger. Strange and powerful, this coming of age story is filled with old wisdom, a bit of magic and a deeper understanding of the unique wildness of Australia. This is just the thing for anyone who enjoys a quest be it THE HOBBIT or ON THE ROAD. 5 stars

Good guys sometimes do dumb things but are still good guys at heart. Freddy is a glass artist who is usually self medicated and needs to supplement his income until he makes it big with his glass beads. He gets involved with a bad drug guy laundering money which at first was ok but now that Freddy wants to be done with all of it, the bad guy and his henchman are looking for him to change his mind. That is bad enough but Freddy is afraid that they will find him and track down his grandmother at an assisted living facility. He really doesn't want to endanger anyone there and then there is a murder at the facility and everything goes bonkers. Some of his friends at the facility suddenly fear for their family members and turn into amateur sleuths while Freddy just keeps trying to lead everyone away and stay alive. Dark but interjected with fun quirky people that make it a bit lighter than some of her books. Fans of classic Cooneys as well as zany crime novels like the Janet Evanovitch Stephanie Plum series will enjoy. 4 stars
You know how when you tell a little fib and it keeps getting bigger and bigger til it takes on a life of its own? Amy is like that little fib. She is working hard at her summer job as a chambermaid at a resort until she takes her final test and becomes her lifelong passion - an EMT. The only problem with that is Amy freaks herself out on tests and this is her last chance so she tells everyone (including herself) that she has passed complete with a forged letter and uniform. She befriends her lonely landlord who is testing recipes out on Amy in anticipation of the arrival of his Russian mail-order bride but every kind gesture or friendship gets taken out of context leaving Amy more confused and off kilter than before. Quirky Amy is a Pippi Longstocking kind of character who seems able to reinvent herself at a moments notice and although I found myself shaking my head at the things she did, I still was rooting for her success. This debut has a priceless cover that I wanted to frame! 4 stars
What could be better than growing up to summers away from the city at the family compound in Cape Cod? Elle and her sister in addition to childhood friend Jonas have wonderful and horrific memories of warm lazy days, adventures, family drama and so many secrets. Years later Elle and her husband Peter and kids along with Jonas and his wife and kids still come up to spend summer at the Paper Palace. But this summer heats up something else and Elle will risk her marriage and the loss of a lifetime friend. This powerful debut looks at the aches and pains of puberty, family secrets and the summer of innocence lost. It is not easy reading but the characters ring true and you will experience the nostalgia of childhood summers at the shore or a cabin in the woods. This will appeal to readers of deep family drama and secrets. 4 stars You don't have to be a dog lover or owner to appreciate this clever memoir of a young woman who, unhappy with her job , starts a dog-walking agency that eventually takes over her life. Each chapter is devoted to one of her clients and with it a warm story not only of the dogs but also the owners and Kate's employees. Bits of love for London and a high five for following your passion even before you know what your true passion is. This is a dog biscuit of a book - a treat to read and much tail wagging. 4 stars
The Sisters of Suspense have done it again! Addison is an amnesiac who is saved by a friendly truck driver and after two years still has no memory of who she is or where she came from. Now that she has found the man she wants to marry and spend her life with WHAMMO, her husband from her previous life finds her and convinces her to come back to their happy life and young daughter. Addison/Cassandra has scars and is starting to experience some scary flashbacks so who is it really that is staring back at her from the mirror? A twisted wild ride into buried memory, a forgotten life and an uncertain future which leaves the reader questioning everything that the main character does. Readers of their other books as well as those who crave a fast paced thriller will be very satisfied with this new addition. 4 stars
