They were best friends once. Their daughters were best friends once. Can they do it again? Manipulative moms fighting to be the alpha and pulling out the stops on gossip, social media and an anonymous mom chat room. Scandal, friendships and cyberbullying all have a role here in the lives of these two women and their daughters who attend a private school. This amounts to Prep School Hell and sadly, it is the kids who suffer the most. Readers of BIG LITTLE LIES and all those books about mean girls and toxic friendships will eat this up. 3 1/2 stars

The Brennans are a close Irish Catholic family so when things go wrong they band together though that doesn't mean there won't be words. Sunday ran away to L.A. to find herself but instead found herself in a hospital after a car crash. Now, back in the firm embrace of her family she needs to make amends to her ex-fiancee, make nice to her brothers, try to save the family pub from financial ruin and deal with the issues that forced her to leave in the first place. The other thing she needs to do is keep a lid on all the family secrets that are threatening to come to the surface. I enjoyed the banter of the siblings and their fierce loyalty to each other but don't confuse this with THE WALTONS, this family has a very dark side. So pull up a stool, draw yourself a pint and get to know the Brennans. This debut would lend itself to a mini series! Fans of family drama with a dark side will enjoy. 4 stars Raised by their ballet instructor mother who demanded perfection in her two daughters, Marie and Dara knew that they would continue running their parent's dance studio after their accidental death. Now along with Charlie, Dara's husband, the studio is preparing for the event of the year- The Nutcracker and making some much needed repairs on time. All is well until the new contractor seduces Marie and a series of accidents plague the studio. Charlie is dealing with chronic pain and Marie is dancing with her head in the clouds leaving Dara to keep it all from crashing down. Mysterious mishaps and so many secrets move this thriller along to an ending worthy of a standing ovation. Anyone who knows the ups and downs of maintaining a family business will appreciate the many headaches they deal with as well as those who know the emotional highs and lows of dancing in their youth and of course, readers who crave a well crafted thriller. 4 stars
Christy Lefteri's stories have a profound effect on me. There is such simple beauty and peace in her descriptions amidst violent or destructive settings. In this case, it is the migrating songbirds and their freedom as opposed to the hunting of these birds and the longing and loneliness of the characters. This is the story of Nisha ,an immigrant worker from Sri Lanka and her employer Petra. Petra is a single mom who employs Nisha and doesn't bother to get to know her thinking only of her as hired help for housekeeping and as a nanny to Petra's daughter. Nisha works from 6am to 7pm every day but Sunday leaving her with little time for friends or relationships and a small window to communicate with her daughter back home. When Nisha goes missing Petra begins to learn more about this woman who has been a huge part of her life for years but may as well be a stranger. Christy Lefteri shares a very personal look at those who are usually overlooked. This is the perfect choice for readers who are looking to expand their understanding of the world around us. 4 1/2 stars
The creepy plantation in her small North Carolina town is not where she thought her friend would get married and she certainly never wanted to set foot again on the Woodsman Plantation. She really would like to forget the last time she was there and how it broke apart her relationship with her other best friend Jesse. The plantation has been turned into something of a tourist attraction adding a fun look at plantation life which could not be further than the truth. Mira feels the evil almost from day one and when the bride goes missing she cannot ignore the whispers and strange things she is seeing.
The time for fun is over and the ghosts have revenge on their mind making the children pay for the sins of the father. Laced with recollections of the horrors that the slaves faced at the hands of their white masters this is historical horror wrapped up in an atmospheric gothic story of ageless revenge. This will appeal more to lovers of dark ghost stories more so than stories of slavery but it does a good job of pointing out how we mask places of violence and abuse and call it a historical landmark. 4 stars |
