A true cat and mouse game that is perfectly staged and perfectly executed. Claire is a french language tutor who teeters on the edge of the cliff of mental stability. Her ex-husband is responsible for the death of her daughter but it is Claire who is swimming in guilt for not believing her allegations. Simon the ex is getting remarried and fears that crazy Claire will get in the way of his future happiness so he hires an ex-cop who now "fixes" things. Sloan will get to Claire and try to stop her from doing anything that will harm either of them. Befriending Claire is the first step but then Sloan learns more about the past that might make Claire look a little bit less crazy. This is a fast paced thriller with tough capable women bent on revenge and it doesn't get any better. A great start to a new imprint. 4 stars

A cursed pocket watch is the focus in this collaboration of some of the finest historical mystery writers. Linked by each story, a gold pocket watch engraved with a french saying and a mermaid travels across the seas and does harm to every person it comes in contact with. Seamlessly linked, each story has the distinct voice of the author yet they all feature wonderful characters, dashing tales, classic wit and a mystery that captures our full attention. Following a timeline that begins in the mid 1700's, this will delight not only fans of the four authors but any reader of historical romance and period mysteries. 4 stars
In the remote Bitterroot Valley of Montana a little girl is left to be raised by her young father. Hers is a rough and tumble beginning and one where she raises herself. Her friends are the creatures in the woods and a little terrier and she reads the land better than most. Her father and his friends live off the bounty of the mountains and valley and do not like the idea of the new celebrities and wealth coming in and fencing off what has been theirs to take until now. Ruthie is fearless, capable and caught between the land she loves and yearning to be like every other girl in the city. A unique blend of Western and a parable on over development of land and natural resources, this is a gritty story of survival and coming of age. |
