This is a prequel to her other books about the Owens witches but you can enjoy it as a standalone. It is a quiet book about good magic, bad men, love and loss. This is the first time I have read a book about the ill treatment of witches in Salem and elsewhere and still consider it to be gently written. Such is the magic of Alice Hoffman's writing. She takes a group of good women with kind hearts and shows us what can happen to them in a world filled with jealous self righteous zealots. We fear what we don't understand so we get rid of what we fear. As an added bonus, there are many old folk remedies using plants and herbs that solve a variety of ailments. I wish she had included recipes for the many unusual teas. 4 1/2 stars

James and Solvig are happy but now James want more - a baby and since Solvig leaves for a month at a time to live in a decompression chamber where she is a deep sea welder, getting pregnant might take a bit of time. Solvig has a secret desire to be chosen to go to Mars and colonize the planet which would mean leaving your family behind forever. She tries to convince herself that she should want a baby and be happy being pregnant but a nagging little voice tells her that she could do more, be more. This slim novel packs a punch. Readers begin to think about what they would do in her shoes. Sometimes you just have to let it all go and aim for the stars. |
I love to read good books and share the new books that are available and those that are coming soon
