This is a the tale of Nathaniel Hawthorne's muse for THE SCARLET LETTER. A young Scottish immigrant comes to Salem with her loser husband who goes off to sea. Isobel is a skilled seamstress and longs to add forbidden colors to her embroidery and her skills come in handy when her husband doesn't come back from the sea. In the meantime she meets struggling writer Nathaniel Hawthorne and falls into a romantic fling. That doesn't end well and once again Isobel is left to her own to find her way in the world of powerful men. Even with friends in town her relationships with men and seeing color in the world could have some branding her as a witch. Once again we see strong women that are hemmed in by a society that favors men.

Isla has been tossed between her struggling mother in the states and her grandmother and family in Puerto Rico. Because of this she sometimes feels like she doesn't belong anywhere but grows to love the summers she spends in Puerto Rico. The older she gets the more inquisitive she becomes about secret rooms, family members passing and the frightening nightmares she now has. The more she learns of the stories the more the nightmares make sense and her role in the family legacy. A rich and colorful journey into the culture and ghosts with unfinished business as well as an enduring coming of age story. 4 stars
Jenny is a single mom with more than a few things on her mind - the cash she doesn't have, the new job she needs and her daughter Billie Starr who is tired of hearing sorry. One night of no good for some easy cash turns into an above board job offer from the politician she was supposed to set up. What she sees as a turn of luck turns bad again pretty quick when the threats start and Billie goes missing. Billie is a precocious girl who along with her best friend is really tired of sometimes having to be a parent to her parent. Political hijinks, a mom trying to be a better mom than her mom was before her and a bucketful of flawed characters make up this wacky plot. Sure to be a hit with fans of Finlay Donovan and Janet Ivanovich's Stephanie Plum series. 3 1/2 stars
