Welcome to the world of Gods and the unlikely companion group of three mortals and a little god who share the road. They are on this quest for different reasons but all have been hurt over time and are distrustful.
The kingdoms are at a crossroad of chaos and it will take a fierce Godkiller, an ousted knight trying to help a friend and a young girl alone in the world except for the little god of white lies who is bound to her. The world building is top notch, the characters are well developed in that we care about them and feel their loyalty, bravery and hope even when the future looks bleak. I hope this will be the first of many Godkiller stories. Fans of Robert Jordan, Patrick Rothfuss and THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE will not be able to put down this fantasy with touches of medieval and norse mythology down. 4 1/2 stars

The perfect couple move into their perfect house and begin a family a bit quicker than planned.
Essie's pregnancy is anything but easy and she is plagued by nausea and nightmares. Her husband starts out at her side but soon is spending more and more time in the attic. Essie's mom and grandmother fear the worst - that the family curse is once again coming true. Essie will fight the darkness and the two women who began the curse for her husband. Creepy curses and a haunted house theme that also touches on the fears and paranoia that can come with pregnancy. 3 stars The author set out to write not just another haunted house story and she succeeded. There aren't that many horror tales that made me laugh at the same time I was being scared silly but this gets a big ole checkmark in both boxes. Margaret is a very patient woman who loves her home even though every September the walls drip blood, wailing and screams go on all night, there is a monster in the basement and lots of limbless children underfoot not to mention the little boy who bites unless he is reunited with his mom's bones. She has most of it under control and as long as she follows the rules she can get past the unpleasantness. Her one neighbor is understanding, the ghost housekeeper always has a cup of tea and dinner at the ready and she really doesn't understand why her husband couldn't hack it and left. It is about to get more intense now that their daughter is coming for a visit during September on a mission to find her father. As expected things get out of control and all the juggling is taking a toll on Margaret's sanity. You will fall for this tough no nonsense homeowner who just wants to live blissfully in the house she loves even with its quirks. 4 fun scary stars
I enjoy when an author revisits a character whose story isn't ready to be finished yet and Holly Gibney was one of those characters. Holly is a private detective and while she herself is very private ,she is very good at reading people and seeing things that others miss. There are some random people who have gone missing and Holly has been looking for one of them. As she falls down the rabbit hole and the killer kidnappers get bolder Holly's true strengths come to the surface. This is classic Stephen King who has the ability to scare us silly with bad people who might just be someone we would pass on the street. His villains do not always wear a sign marking them as such and we worry that this might just be the end of the characters we grow fond of. Thank you to the author for showing his genius once again. 4 stars
The second book in a fantastic Asian inspired fantasy series full of pirates, politics and power struggles. This is an immersive fantasy that will pull you into a vicious world led by a smart, fierce pirate queen who hungers for the throne but she is not alone and must first fight off contenders from sea and land. Historical background with a wave of imagination that readers of both nautical fiction and fantasy will enjoy. This series is not to be missed. 4 stars A frightening horror story grounded in history about families living on the Texas Mexican border in 1840's. Mexican ranching families living north of the Rio Grande were Mexican citizens yet they were given no support from their home country when American armies swarmed them ready to take the land they had held for generations and claim it for the states. Nena is the daughter of a wealthy rancher who is destined to marry one of her class not her childhood friend Nester a vaquero who works for her family. While a tragic event caused them to be separated for almost ten years those feelings have remained. However they have bigger problems on the horizon. A strange malady is taking hold of the people of South Texas as shadowy blood sucking vampires of legend are attacking more frequently and the Anglo armies land vampires are pushing south. Family loyalty, old traditions, love and magic will all be put to the test in this horror story you can sink your teeth into. Readers of historical fiction will enjoy this as much as the readers of classic horror stories. 4 stars
A retelling of Rapunzel that is significantly different from the original because she might not be the helpless sleeping princess cursed by a vindictive evil fairy. Instead, we meet Toadling a shape shifting water fairy who has been left by the thorn hedge to stand guard over the tower and princess sleeping inside. For hundreds of years she has seen many close calls but it has been quiet for some time when she first meets Halim a gentle knight who is curious to see if the legend and rumors are true. Toadling and Halim develop a fondness for each other and she lets her guard down which in fairytale land means all Hell breaks loose. This is no Disney rendition but is closer to a dark tome by the Grimm brothers. Masterfully told and fully developed in such a slim volume that is just enough for a one sitting read. 4 stars
Many believe that books are magic and in this story THE SCARLET LETTER was just that. Mia is raised in a cult that took in her pregnant and alone mother years before. Their leader acting as her father is a violent tyrant who demands strict obedience and little interaction with the outside world. Her mother secretly shares stories and a love of books which leads Mia to the library and someone who will save her. A magical copy of THE SCARLET LETTER allows Mia to travel back in time where she falls for none other than Nathaniel Hawthorne. As she finds true love and acceptance she will also understand the damage she may be doing crossing over into his world. She has something that her father wants and he will stop at nothing to get control once again. A beautifully realized story of the power of books to escape and give a voice to the powerless. Once again Alice Hoffman's atmospheric writing takes us to a quiet haven within a violent world with a hint of the mystical. 4 stars If, or in this case when, we cut emissions to zero to halt the ever looming climate disasters what would that world look like? In this debut one possible future is explored. As part of the Great Transition everyone worked together to achieve zero emissions and a new society of cooperative help and awareness was born. Larch and his wife Kristina remember the world before Day Zero as they fell in love in a hospital after being injured fighting wildfires but this is the only world their teenage daughter Emi has ever known. While she is still concerned with getting her term project finished and trying to figure out her parents her world is shaken when a terrorist attack occurs and her mom, named a suspect is missing. Not knowing who to trust or what they will learn, they set out to find Kristina and get answers. This speculative story of our future focuses on a positive outcome to what will be a frightening reality of climate disasters to come while keeping us tethered to characters that we can all relate to. Scary and hopeful in equal measure this will appeal to science fiction readers as well as those who want a family drama with deep dives into the characters. It is a story that both young adult and adult audiences need to read now. 4 stars Jay sets out to recover his dead father bones off the Pacific coast where he committed suicide. He dons his scuba gear alone and promptly runs into a massive problem - that of being swallowed by a sperm whale. With one hour of air and some knowledge of whale digestive systems he is in a bit of a pickle.
Natural horror as well as Jay's inward battle with his relationship with his father and the voice in his head. This is a sure bet for those of us who are fascinated with the deep and love adventure but don't really want to deal with giant creatures like whales, deep sea squid, dinosaurs and great white sharks. 4 stars |
