A young British couple goes through a financial crisis just as they approach their wedding and honeymoon to Bora-Bora. The days and nights are magical until a dive trip where they make an unusual discovery that will change their lives forever. A canvas bag filled with money and diamonds in a plane wreck without survivors falls into their hands - what could go wrong? They try to return to their normal life where Erin works as a documentary filmmaker interviewing prisoners. Are the police watching them? Do the criminals know what happened to their stuff? The choppy writing style adds to the frenzy of planning a wedding, a job loss and this incredible turn of events. It all happens so fast that they begin to question each other and you start to look for more than one bad guy. I wouldn't read this thriller on the way to an island paradise.

A history of how the White man has misunderstood misled and mistreated the Native Americans combined with what the Urban Indians are dealing with today in Oakland California. Each character has an issue with their identity from not having a strong sense of family to an overwhelming sense of the bigger Native American family. They will all come together at a huge Pow Wow and something will happen that will alter their lives forever. The language is beautiful and even in the despair, the flaws and injustice of the world, there is kindness and beauty and hope.
Debut author Katy Regan paints a portrait of a family that is held together by love but is just barely hanging on. Juliet had Zac ten years ago and that was exactly when the horrible thing happened and Liam, Zac's father, left. Now Zac is old enough to want more than just his mother's and grandparents love- he wants to know about his dad. Zac is overweight and is being bullied at school and Juliet also uses food and alcohol as a comfort device. As she tries to field his persistent questions she enlists the help of a friend to get them both eating better and exercising when she realizes that he is not going to give up on his search. Zac also has a champion in Teagan, his best friend who will do anything she can to help him. This is a sweet story of human frailty and how wounds stay open and fester with time. When too much time goes by with words left unsaid it will take a ten year old boy who decides he has had enough of wondering to get it done. The story is told in alternating chapters by Zac, Juliet and Grandfather Mick each giving their particular slant to the events.
This sequel shows us what happens to a town in crisis. Beartown is a small town ripped apart, not only by the loss of its heart - the hockey team but also by its soul - the people who have left adrift with nothing to anchor to. Hockey was everything to Beartown, the whole reason people wake up in the morning and with the loss of the team to a neighboring rival town and most of the star players, Beartown just wants to pull up the covers and hide. A new female coach is brought in who just may be able to patch up the team using unconventional methods and a dangerous combination of volatile boys along with the support of the old coach and new management. After some "boys will be boys" pranks, not all committed by boys and other more dangerous events take place it is hard to see if this new team will make it. Marriages will falter, old friendships will be tested and childhood cut short for some. Backman once again seduces us with colorful, yet everyday characters blended with thoughtful phrasing all the while prying our eyes wide open to the effects of hate and stupidity that drives the human race. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one but you will be missing the finer points of what led up to these events and denying yourself one beautifully crafted read.
