Cedar has been raised by a nice Midwestern couple but when she goes searching for her birth mother she finds out that she is Native American. Something weird is happening to the birth rate and soon everyone is on the verge of hysteria. This affects Cedar because she has a secret that she tells her birth mother - she is pregnant. As the government begins rounding up all the pregnant women supposedly so that they can help what will be difficult pregnancies, Cedar tries to flee and is caught.
With the help of all her family she breaks out of the center and must go into hiding to keep her baby safe. Will her baby be ok? Will she be ok? Will the world be ok? This frightening account "a la Handmaid's Tale" is written in a journal Cedar writes for her child. The scariest thing about this book is that we seem to be dangerously close to a world in which women have no choice about what is best for them or their unborn child.
