A dual history masterpiece featuring the main branch of the New York City Public Library, delving into its riches and secrets both in 1913 and 1993. The story begins when a young family is housed in an apartment deep within the library. Laura Lyons yearns to be taken seriously as a journalist and her husband is the Superintendent for the vast and grand library. They and their two children have the run of this magical castle after the staff and patrons go home but all is not perfect as priceless books begin to go missing and the blame falls on the Lyons family. Fast forward to 1993 where Laura's granddaughter Sadie is working for the library organizing a very special exhibit of some of the library's more interesting and priceless items. Suddenly it is as if the ghost book stealer has returned and Sadie's career is on the line. A little bit history, a little bit mystery and a lot of love for NYC, Fiona Davis has created another story illuminating a bit of unknown New York. Her fans will not be disappointed nor will any reader who enjoys digging through the layers of this fascinating city. 4 1/2 stars
